MANUEL E FRANCISCO AIRES MATEUS

Manuel e Francisco Aires Mateus nasceram em Lisboa em Lisboa em 1963 e 1964. Formaram-se na Faculdade de Arquitectura /U.T.L. em 1986 e 1987 respectivamente. Começaram a colaborar com o Arqº Gonçalo Byrne a partir de 1983 e começaram a desenvolver projectos enquanto autores em 1988. O atelier Aires Mateus foi nessa altura constituído pelos dois irmãos apesar de ocupar um espaço dentro do atelier do Arq. Gonçalo Byrne. A crescente escala de projectos fê-los estabelecer um espaço autónomo para responder às solicitações de trabalho. Desde essa altura a dimensão e quantidade de trabalho tem sido prolífica resultando em diversos prémios de arquitectura nacionais e internacionais. A visibilidade do seu trabalho fez com que fossem convidados para fazer conferências e lecionar em várias instituições internacionais como a Graduate School of Design em Harvard, A Accademia de arquitectura de Mendrisío e em outras em Portugal. A estrutura neste momento abrange dois escritórios, ambos em Lisboa, tendo estabelecidas diversas parcerias com ateliers locais para os projetos internacionais.

Manuel and Francisco Aires Mateus were born in Lisbon in 1963 and 1964. They also graduated from “Faculdade de Arquitectura / U.T.L” with one year diference in 1986 and 87 respectively. They started collaborating with the Arch. Gonçalo Byrne since 1983 and started developing their own projects as authors in 1988. The office Aires Mateus was established independently although it was housed in Gonçalo Byrne’s studio in the first years. The increasing scale of work made them establish a larger and autonomous space to fulfil the demands. Since then the scale and the amount of projects has been prolific, resulting in several national and international awards. The visibility of their work has made them being invited and accepting lecturing and teaching at several institutions like the Graduate School of Design in Harvard, The Accademia di Architetura in Mendrízio as well as several others in Portugal. The structure right now spans through two studios both based in Lisbon, having several partnerships with local studios for international works.
